Wells Fargo Bank has introduced cardless ATMs to its customers in the United States. Customers can now withdraw cash from all of its 1300 ATMs without inserting their debit cards.

The bank launched the new technology earlier this week and customers with a smartphone and the Wells Fargo Banking App can use the service at no charge. Wells Fargo banking app issues an 8-digit access code which can only be used once. The customer simply inputs that access code into the ATM, then enter their ATM PIN to get cash.

In a press release the bank noted that approximately 20 million Wells Fargo customers already use the app. It evident with such huge numbers this was the right move for the bank.

“We believe the future is cardless,” says Brett Pitts, the company’s head of digital for virtual channels.

Later this year Wells Fargo also plans to introduce a “tap and pay” ATM access service that uses “near-field communication” (NFC) technology. To use the service customers with NFC-equipped smartphones can use mobile payment apps such as Apple Pay, Android Pay, Samsung Pay or the Wells Fargo Mobile Wallet, hold the device to an NFC-enabled ATM input their PIN and receive cash.

Once the service is unveiled, the bank won’t have much upgrading as 40% of Wells Fargo ATMs are currently NFC-enabled. This simply means that in the near future we will be seeing way less cards and more mobile devices.

Wells Fargo Bank also just became the first large bank to upgrade entire fleet of ATMs with card-free account access through One-Time Access Code mobile technology.
