The Roku 2 XD Set Top Streaming Player Review. The player delivers HD content to your television from popular streaming platforms such as Netflix and Hulu Plus.
A set top box is a good investment if you are the type of person who likes to watch your favorite TV shows and movies on demand, due to your busy schedule which doesn’t allow you to watch them while they’re aired on live TV.
If you are a subscriber to Hulu Plus and Netflix among other streaming services, you definitely need a set top box. There are quite a few options out there for you to choose from, there’s the Apple TV, Android Streaming Sticks such as the Sanwa 400-MEDI005, Netgear’s NeoTV, Roku’s line of streaming devices and others.
After almost a year of writing about various types of set-top boxes, we finally decided to get our hands on one of the Roku Box. The Roku 2 XD is the one we acquired and after four weeks of watching high-definition video, we finally came to a conclusion about what we want to say about the device.
The Roku 2 XD 1080p Streaming player puts out tons of online content making it available to you on your HDTV in 720p/1080p or on a regular big box television but only in 480i resolution. In addition to online videos from your favorite streaming services, the box also delivers Angry Birds game to your television for you to play using your remote which comes included with the box.
THE ROKU 2 XD USER INTERFACE
The Roku 2 XD features an simple and easy-to-use interface which has only four options on its menu, the option to see the channels you have added with “My Channel”, find and add new channels with “Channel Store”, Search for a specific channel using the “Search” menu, and the “Settings” option allows the user to change the interface theme, select your preferred viewing resolution whether 720p or 1080p.
THE SIZE AND SHAPE
The device is very compact, making it a space saving device measuring only about 2-inches thick and about 4.5-inch in width. There’s an optional accessory available for you to mount in on the back of your HDTV and out of sight in a few easy steps.
ROKU 2 XD – THE GOOD
The Roku 2 XD is very small and will fit anywhere with very little effort, it delivers high-definition content to your HDTV or regular TV and you don’t even need to subscribe to cable. It utilizes a WiFi connection to deliver content, which means you don’t have to worry about running an extra Ethernet cable into the room. Roku also offers cross-platform search, capable of finding content across major streaming services.
It has four different ports at the back including; an HDMI connection, DC port for which using only a little electricity to operate, a microSD card slot and a AV out port for connectivity to older televisions. The remote control features dedicated buttons for Netflix, Pandora and Crackle…
ROKU 2 XD – THE BAD
I think they should have added an Ethernet port as an alternative to WiFi, even though at times we hate seeing excessive cables, the Roku 2 XD doesn’t perform at its best if you don’t have a strong wireless connection in your home theater or living room. Can’t seem to find any channels for YouTube nor Spotify, and most of the channels available to you needs a paid subscription.
The Roku 2 XD Set Top Streaming Player can be found from electronic retailers including Best Buy, Radio Shack, online stores such as Amazon and eBay for a mere $59.99.
