Sony has announced its new innovation in digital image capture, the NEX-3 and NEX-5 ultra-compact Alpha DSLRs with interchangeable lenses after the video they also revealed of their upcoming HD camcorder with interchangeable lenses. The NEX-3 and NEX-5 comes in a ultra small form factor, however regardless of the size it delivers DSLR picture quality and a responsive shooting. The NEX-5 measures a mere 24.2mm and the NEX-3 to 25.4mm at their slimmest point, thanks to its ‘mirrorless’ construction.

The NEX-5 has been granted the title of the world’s smallest and lightest interchangeable lens digital camera. They both get a 14.2 Megapixel Exmor APS HD CMOS sensor, BIONZ image processor, a 3-inch TruBlack LCD with touchscreen, built-in anti-dust system, and E-mount for interchangeable lenses.

They also both features an ISO 200-12,800, 10 digital zoom, Contrast AF, Face Detection; Smile Shutter; Sweep Panorama (3D ready); iAUTO; Auto HDR; Anti Motion Blur Mode; Hand-held Night Shot and support for Memory Stick card and SD/SDHC/SDXC cards. The major difference between both is that the NEX-3 shoots 1280×720p video in MP4 format while the NEX-5 is capable of 1920×1080i AVCHD video recording.

The NEX-5A and NEX-3A cameras, which are supplied with SEL16F28 16mm prime lens, will cost about $650 and $550 respectively.
